The
Aboriginal Peoples of Northern Alberta have traditional spiritual
healing practices and ceremonies that have been passed through the
generations. Today many Aboriginal people still value their
traditional beliefs. Sun Dances, Vision Quests an Sweat Lodges are
lead by spiritual leaders. Aboriginal healers use medicinal herbs to
help with the relief of aliments.
In the 19th century settlers to Northern Alberta
brought other spiritual ideas and religions. This is still evident
in the historical sites across the region.

Many of the education and social programs that emerged during
that time were spearheaded by the religious leaders of the day. With
the passing of generations, the role of the Church has diminished in
the delivery of education and social services.

However, religion and spirituality continue to play a
strong role in community cohesiveness, social gatherings and member
support. New residents will be welcomed by the
many denominations supported even in our smaller communities.
Northern Alberta is also
witnessing growth in the number and diversity of faiths as more
and more people form all parts of the globe joining our community.
That's Northern Alberta!
