Travel & Transportation

Planes, trains and automobiles! Travel throughout Northern Alberta is easier than one might think. With major highways, many secondary highways and countless local roads, traffic to and from Northern Alberta is in constant motion. Our highways intersect, diverge, and make up part of prominent transportation routes in Canada.

The Northwest region, home of Grande Prairie, Peace River, and High Level is a major part of the CANAMEX Trade Corridor, a four lane divided route intended to connect the North American continent from Mexico to Alaska.

The expansion of Highway 43 into four lanes currently lists as Alberta's top road construction priority.

n this region you'll find junctions to British Colombia which lead to the Alaska Highway, the Bighorn Highway (40) connecting south to the Yellowhead which leads to Edmonton or the west coast, and the Mackenzie Highway (35) leading to the Northwest Territories.

Highway #2, which spans across the region connecting the Northwest to the Northeast, offers breathtaking scenery as you drive along Lesser Slave Lake and discover small vibrant communities nestled along its route. Once in the Northeast region, your adventure continues north on Highway 63 to Fort McMurray, east to Lac La Biche and Cold Lake, or south to Edmonton.

Our highway system is complemented with national airlines, such as Air Canada and Westjet, and regional airlines such as Peace Air, Mikisew Air, Northern Air and Central Mountian Air, which provide scheduled daily flights connecting to Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver, and beyond.

Freight rail services connect industry to domestic and international markets. Of course, we can't forget bus services like Greyhound, which circle the region daily bringing passengers to and from communities, city centers and beyond.

That's Northern Alberta!
