The oil and gas industry is the engine that runs Alberta. Long
known as Canada's energy province, Alberta produces 55% of Canadian
conventional crude oil, 80% of its natural gas. Alberta's
oil sands, located entirely in Northern Alberta, are one of the
world's two largest sources of bitumen. With Northern Alberta contributing
52% to Alberta's oil production, 37% of its gas production and 100% of the
Province's oil sands development, our region is a significant component of the
prosperity of Alberta In fact Northern Alberta's oil and gas
industry generates over $13.1 billion dollars.
There is a continuous demand for staff in the oil and gas
industry. especially due to the expected increases in oil sands
production, mostly based around the Regional Municipality of Wood
Buffalo.

Current and planned oil sands investment projects are
estimated at $59 billion dollars. Forecasts like these mean that
opportunities are likely to be available for skilled personnel and
entrepreneurs alike!
The oil sands represent about 50% of Western Canada's total crude
oil output and 10% of North American production. Whether it's in the upstream exploration section, the midstream
production section, or the downstream retail section, the need for
skilled labour, professionals, equipment operators and
entrepreneurs grows with each passing year.

Northern oil sands companies are actively involved in research
carried out under the umbrella of CONRAD, the Canadian Oil Sands
Network for Research and Development. This network of companies,
universities and government agencies continually advance the science
and technology of the Albert oil sands through their collaborative
research efforts.
